Luminaires — Particular requirements for emergency lighting. The South African product standard every emergency luminaire and exit sign must meet to be legally compliant.
What SANS 1464-22 covers
The standard sets minimum performance requirements for emergency luminaires: minimum lumen output during the emergency period, battery autonomy (≥1 hour for standard, longer for high-risk areas), thermal and ingress protection, and identification/labelling requirements.
Why it matters
Under the Physical Agents Regulations (effective 6 September 2026), only SANS 1464-22 certified luminaires count toward your compliance. Non-certified imports — even if they're cheaper — won't pass an OHS Act inspection.
